BUZARD, FRANK S (BUZZ) COL USAF (ret)
Buzz passed away peacefully on January 7, 2012 at his home in Rancho Palos Verdes, surrounded by his family.
He was born to Benjamin and Catherine Buzard on April 20, 1921 in St. Joseph, Missouri. After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis in 1943, he received a commission in the Army Air Corps (later the Air Force). While at Washington University he met Patricia May and they married in November 1943.
Buzz served in North Africa during World War II, and after the war, earned a postgraduate engineering degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1950. In 1958 he obtained a master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Illinois. In 1958, Buzz became a part of the first Air Force Satellite project. For the rest of his Air Force career, until his retirement in 1972, he was involved in the development and management of satellite photographic reconnaissance programs.
During his career Buzz was the recipient of the Legion of Merit Medal, the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Award and in 2001 was selected for membership in the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame.
After retiring from the Air Force, Buzz taught for many years in the USC Master of Science in System Management programs, travelling with Pat to teach at adjunct campuses around the world.
He loved exploring other cultures, he loved Hawaii, he loved body surfing, he loved history, he loved biographies. He loved many things. But he loved his wife and his family more than anything.
He is survived by Pat, his loving wife of sixty eight years, his three children, Glenn, Gary, and Catherine, has grandchildren Nick, Jason, and Lauren, his brothers Bob, Don and Phil, and daughters in law Linde and Kathy.
