Floyda Mae Pouncy Thompson was born in Thomasville, Alabama on April 24, 1932 to the late Freda Pouncy Holt and Prese Pouncy. She was the sixth of ten children. Floyda accepted Christ at an early age at New Hope No. 1 Baptist Church in Thomasville, where she attended with her family, which became one of her social gatherings. Floyda excelled in school and skipped grades twice during her K-12 grade level years. Her father purchased her "extras" due to her love for school and education. She was always obedient and respectful. She reamied that way all of her life.
After graduating high school, Floyda went on to attend Smith and Gaston Business College (aka: Booker T. Washington Business School). Upon returning to Thomasville, she married Eugene Thompson on December 23,1951. To this union five children were born. As a young mother, she moved to Los Angeles, California in 1952. Floyda later became a faithful member of the Avalon Church of Christ.
Her children were her major focus. She taught all her children to read before they attended kindergarten or preschool. She also made sure that her children attended church every Sunday and never missed school unless they were extremely ill. During summer, she insisted that her children study and read in preparation for the fall semester. Floyda was an active member of the school PTA and supervised field trips and other activities. Floyda found time to make her children clothes through her love for sewing. She was a Superwoman. Floyda made home cooked meals, visited anyone who was ill, went to Bible classes, and always had a smile on her face. She also organized the first Pouncy Family Reunion over 20 years ago.
Before retiring, Floyda was employed by Max Factor, Mattell Toys, the Compton Unified School District as a school community liason, and also served as the Sears Department Store Training Instructor. Once she retired from Sears, she volunteered in the schools and in various political elections including both of the Obama Presidential campaigns. Floyda, affectionately known as Grammy, also found time to take care of her grandchildren and attend all of their school and athletic activities. Floyda enjoyed watching sports, especially her favorite teams: USCFootbaU, Lakers Basketball atid Dodgers Baseball, including celebrating her 80th birthday at Dodger Stadium with her family. Floyda treated everyone with kindness and believed in giving "hugs" to everyone. Floyda remained a member of the Avalon Church of Christ for over 50 years and was a devoted member until her health challenges.
Floyda was a beloved wife, mother grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin and friend. She never voiced an unkind word to anyone. She was truly a Christian example. Floyda always remained patient and sensitive to the needs of those she encountered. She was preceded in death by her parents, Prese and Freda, her siblings, Edith, Willie Ann, Prese Jr., Levident, Susie ,Betty, Jim Lucy and her son, Eugene.
Floyda leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Eugene; Daughters: Janice Filer (Duane), Sylvia Walker (David), Saundra James (Kevin), and Delia Thompson-Bell (Fulton); Grandchildren: Arinn Filer, Lance Filer (Faviola), Marcus Simmons, Maurice Simmons, Erica Walker, Terrance Walker, Phylisha Sekou (Jamal), James Bell and Justus Bell; Great Grandchildren: Lance Giovanni Filer, Jamie Simmons, Jaylen Simmons and Marcus Simmons, Jr.:Sister Dora Green (Levon). Sisters-in-law: Marquetta Thompson, Clyde Taylor, and Doris Williams. Brother-in-lam Herman Thompson (Margert) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
