Feliciano S. Navalta, Jr., M.D. (“Jun”) died peacefully on October 20, 2019 surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his unfailingly devoted wife of 56 years, Azucena Navalta (nee Paz); son, Carryl P. Navalta, and his wife, Sue Andersen-Navalta; son, Earl P. Navalta, and his wife, Candy Fargas; two granddaughters, Laura and Cassie Navalta; brother, Arturo Navalta; sister, Nancy DeJesus; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Feliciano and Eustaquia Navalta, and three sisters.
Jun was raised in the town of Agno, Pangasinan Province, Philippines. He was valedictorian of Agno High School in 1952. After receiving his medical training at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center in Manila, he and his wife moved to the United States in 1964 where he completed an internship at Delaware County Memorial Hospital and a general surgery residency at St. Agnes Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He then completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Howard University College of Medicine, training at Washington, DC General Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital. He moved his family to Southern California in 1971 and completed additional training in orthopedic surgery at California Hospital. He eventually settled in Palos Verdes Estates, CA in 1976 where he lived for the remainder of his life.
Jun started a private practice in Carson, CA in 1972 then moved his practice to Long Beach, CA and lastly to Paramount, CA. He performed most of his surgeries at Charter Suburban Hospital, Norwalk Hospital, and Bellflower Hospital. He was fiercely dedicated to providing the best care possible. His patients loved his bedside manner and genuine respect for them and he was greatly admired by his colleagues. He maintained his practice for 45 years before finally retiring in 2017 at the age of 78 years.
Jun maintained his Filipino heritage while living in the United States. He was a founding member of the Agno Association of Southern California and served as President for 12 years. He was also a member of the Philippine Medical Association of Southern California.
Jun cherished his personal time and made sure to live life to the fullest. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends, dancing with his wife, and singing with friends. He was an avid traveler who was particularly drawn to places of historical significance. He also visited less-traveled destinations, such as the Falkland Islands, Iceland, Namibia, Togo, and Senegal. Besides traveling with his wife and family, he also was delighted to be in the company of relatives and colleagues. In total, he and his wife set foot on all but one of earth’s continents.
