A tribute from the Kiwanis Club:
Farriel (Dobbie) Dobard
Kiwanis Member 1965 – 2010
The Kiwanis Club of San Bernardino was informed of the passing of Farriel (Dobbie) Dobard this week. Dobbie joined the Club in 1965 and served continuously for 45 years. During Dobbie's tenure in the Club, he was an active member serving on the Board of Directors and going through the offices. He was President of the Club in 1995-96.
Dobbie passed on August 18, 2020. He had relocated to Long Beach, to be near his family. In the last few years, he had been dealing with Cancer and was in a nursing facility for an extended period. Dobbie's wife Helen has advanced Alzheimer's and resides with their daughter in Long Beach.
During his later years in Kiwanis, Dobbie and Helen were very active in motor home travel, and Dobbie served as the travel master for several caravans. Dobbie would go on trips and come back to the Club to share his adventures. I think I remember Dobbie worked for the County of San Bernardino before he retired in housing. He was a staunch supporter of a girls' sports program, which the Club joined Dobbie in supporting.
One of the memorable moments in Dobbie's latter years in the Club was at a social event when the master of ceremonies asked the Kiwanians to introduce their guests. Dobbie went into a rambling introduction of his wife that went on and on. Eventually, it became clear that he could not recall Helen's name. The Club gave him a hard time about that incident for some time. The Club honored Dobbie with the Legion of Honor for 40 years of service to Kiwanis in 2006.
The services for Farriel Dobard will be September 2, 2020, at Green Hills Mortuary in Rancho Palos Verdes.
