Evelyn Cagney

August 2, 1924 — September 2, 2022

Evelyn Mruz Cagney passed away peacefully in her home on September 2, 2022 at the age of 98.

Evelyn was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1924 and grew up in nearby Bayonne. During WWII, she worked in the offices of a New York ship building company. Later, she met her husband Bill, a dashing Air Force combat veteran, in Manhattan where they both worked. Evelyn and Bill were married in 1951 and began their family life in New York. In 1966, the family relocated to Hawai’i. While raising five children, Evelyn also worked as a teller at the Bank of Hawai’i.

The family relocated to Rancho Palos Verdes in 1973, and Evelyn took a position at Security Pacific Bank and, later, Bank of America. Over her nearly fifty-year career in banking, Evelyn rose to the position of Assistant Vice President before scaling back to part-time work. In her later years, Evelyn’s banking clients included numerous sons and daughters of community members whose first accounts she had opened when they were children. Evelyn began considering retirement in her mid-eighties, but her co-workers and customers were dear friends whose company she cherished. That motivated her to continue to work at the Malaga Cove Branch of Bank of America into her early nineties. Few knew her true age, though, because she had the fun-loving personality, rapier wit and sense of humor of a much younger person. She was beloved in her community and remains so to this day.

Evelyn is survived by four children – Marilyn, Bill, Larry and Kathleen, their spouses, Roy, Charlene, Andrew and Joe, and her beloved granddaughter, Kami. Evelyn now joins her husband, Bill, and daughter Elizabeth, both of whom preceded her in death.

Evelyn was an inspiration – kind, loving, strong and independent. She will live forever in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the American Cancer Society.
