October 4, 1939 — January 13, 2021

Ernest Edward Lowe (Ernie) passed away on January 13, 2021 after a short battle with Covid-19. He was 81 years old. Ernie was born on October 4, 1939 to Eddie and Mabel (Ward) Lowe. He attended school in San Pedro, graduating from San Pedro High School, where he played Varsity Football. Ernie served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1961 in the 82nd Airborne. When he got out of the Army, Ernie started skydiving with his friend Manuel Cabrera, who belonged to the Latin Skydiver's Club. Eventually, Ernie was allowed to jump with them even though he stood out as the only non-Latino. That prompted Ernie to give himself the name Ernesto Lopez for when the need arose. Ernie was proud of the fact that he made over 100 skydives. Ernie loved to hike, hiking the Grand Canyon several times, as well as many other canyons. Ernie joined the I.L.W.U. in 1963. He was a proud union member, retiring as a foreman in 2007. Ernie Loved San Pedro and was a lifetime resident. He had always had a smile on his face and loved to laugh. He was a friend to everyone he met. Ernie is survived by many extended family members in Orange County CA and Mount Airy, NC Ernie also had many life long friends in San Pedro who considered him family and will forever miss him.
