Ernesto “Ernie” Calderon, age 90, passed away peacefully in Torrance, California. Born in Mazatlán, Mexico, Ernie came to the United States at the age of 8, where he resided in San Diego, San Pedro, and Torrance, CA.
Starting his career early, Ernie joined DiCarlo Bakery at just 17, where he worked as a machine operator for 35 years. Known for his dedication, he had lied about his age to begin work sooner, following in the footsteps of his mother, who worked as a cleaning lady for Mr. DiCarlo. It was at the bakery that he met Benny Sepulveda, who would introduce him to his sister, Connie, the first love of Ernie’s life and future wife. They married in 1955 and went on to raise three children: Steve, Ralph, and Ernie Jr. In the late 1960s, they also welcomed Ernie’s younger brother, Chris, into their home.
After Connie’s passing in 1978 due to cancer, she left Ernie with a wish to find happiness again, which he fulfilled two years later when he met Minette at a Halloween party. They married on December 23, 1980, in Crestline, CA, and shared a joyful 43 years together, dancing and traveling.
In addition to his time at DiCarlo Bakery, Ernie worked as a security guard at Torrance Memorial Hospital, Aerospace Corporation, and finally at Cedars-Sinai, retiring at the age of 78.
He enjoyed watching and coaching his children in AYSO soccer, gardening, and visiting his family home in Crestline, CA. A cherished memory in Crestline was the chili verde burrito named after him at a bowling alley cafe on Main Street—a fun legacy he left to the town. Ernie loved travel, especially cruises, having enjoyed 17 trips with Minette. He also had a great sweet tooth, particularly for ice cream and cookies, and relished dining out.
Ernie is survived by his beloved wife, Minette; his children, Steve, Ralph, and Ernie Jr.; his stepchildren, Brian, Denise, Wayne, and Curt; his daughters-in-law, Cheryl, Janet, Cheryl, Irma, Michelle, Anamay, and Mary; and his grandchildren, Joey, Stevie, Cynthia, Catherine, Crystal, David, Sean, Christy, Nicole, Howard, Christopher, and Alyssa. He is also survived by his sister, Mauda, and his brother, Chris.
Ernie’s memory lives on through the lives he touched, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
