Emmett William Murray

April 16, 1930 — February 1, 2014

Emmett Murray of Manhattan Beach, California passed away on February 1 in Redondo Beach. Emmett was born and raised in Staten Island, New York to parents Kenneth Murray and Gladys Luecke Murray.
After serving in the US Navy during the Korean War, he was honorably discharged and moved to Manhattan Beach, Ca where he met and married his wife of 58 years, Lorna Guelff Murray. Emmett was an entrepreneur early on. He was one of the first firefighters to receive a fire science degree, retiring from the Los Angeles Fire Department in 1971. Emmett was a South Bay Real Estate Broker for over 50 years with his company Strand Associates, helping many family and friends realize their dream of home ownership. He owned The Pelican Restaurant in El Porto (formerly the Turf n' Sand, where he met his wife!) and South Bay Tours and Travel in Manhattan Beach.
Emmett was an avid golfer and traveler, often combining these passions! He golfed throughout Scotland and Ireland. He skied the Alps and cruised the Rhine, he was blessed by Pope Pius XII at the Vatican and played golf with the Aga Khan in Sardinia. Emmett walked the ruins of Machu Picchu and swam with sharks in Tahiti. No one lived life or loved life more than Emmett! He loved nothing better than traveling with his family and friends and showing them his world.
Emmett is survived by his wife Lorna, his two daughters Colleen Ryan (Wayne) of Palm Desert and Denise McPherson (Pel) of Redondo Beach, and the light of his life, his granddaughter, Ainsley McPherson. He's survived by his younger brother Kenneth Murray, and younger sisters Colleen Laureno, Judy Petroni and Dianne Chernyk along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, older sister Elizabeth Mahoney and younger brother Donald Murray.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 6th at Green Hills Mortuary, Rancho Palos Verdes from 5-7pm. A funeral Mass at 10am, Friday February 7th will be celebrated at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach. Internment is set for Monday, February 10th at 10am, Green Hills Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Los Angeles Firemen's Relief Association, Widow and Orphans Fund. (www. lafra.org)
