Elsie Newell Maynes, age 96, of San Pedro, CA, died peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013.
Born Elsie Newell Johnson on August 4, 1917 in Clarksville, Arkansas, she was the daughter of Ora Ermon Howard and Robert Guy Johnson. She was married for 39 years to Bruce Harold Maynes, Lieutenant USN WWII Veteran from Aberdeen, South Dakota, deceased. Elsie Newell received a BA in Music from The College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas.
Elsie Newell was an elementary public school teacher for 27 years in Colorado and Los Angeles, the last 10 years of which were taught at Cabrillo Elementary School in San Pedro where she was also the choir director. In addition to being an active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, she treasured her role as founding director of the Bell Choir and continued in retirement as a well-known and loved piano instructor in the San Pedro community.
Elsie Newell is survived by her sister, Bonnie Guy Flint of Laguna Woods, CA; her two children, Guy Bruce Maynes of San Pedro, CA and Ora Christi Maynes of San Anselmo, CA; her close friend and partner, Richard Finley of Pasadena, CA; and two grandchildren, Ora Beth Mika of San Francisco, CA and Christopher Mika of Washington DC.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
A viewing will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 South Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 8, with a memorial mass to follow at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 1648 West 9th Street, San Pedro, CA.
