Elmyra Craig Murray

June 19, 1923 — September 10, 2016

Elmyra Craig Murray was born in Long Beach, California in 1923. At the age of two, her father, Dr. Leslie Craig, accepted a job as chief surgeon of Shriners Hospital in Honolulu and Myra spent her childhood growing up in a beautiful, rural, open and carefree environment of pre WWII Hawaii. Myra attended Punahou School and became known for her creative ability in fashion and sewing.

She was attending the University of Oregon when WWII broke out, unable to return home for two years. When she finally did rejoin her parents in Honolulu, she met the love of her life, a naval officer and Japanese translator, Arnold Murray. Arnold and Myra married March 10, 1945 and returned to the mainland in 1946 to start their family.

Arnold designed and built a custom home for Myra in Redondo Beach and there they raised a family of five. During this time, Myra returned to university life and completed her bachelor's degree which had been interrupted with WWII. She then took on a job teaching elementary school children at Meadow Park and Arnold Elementary Schools in Torrance. She was as well loved by her students as she was by her children, always lending a kind ear and comfort to the people around her.

Myra was uniquely talented as a seamstress, making very professional clothing and decorations for the whole family and passing on this knowledge on to her children.

When she and Arnold retired, they traveled the world, taking cruises and educational tours and leading camping outings with close friends. When Arnold passed away in December of 2005, Myra was surrounded with love by her five children. They looked after her and cared for her until her passing this last Saturday, September 10, 2016. All would agree that taking care of their mother was a pleasure because Myra was such a sweet woman. Everyone who came into contact with her loved her smile and kind spirit.

Myra Murray is survived by her five children, Craig, Wendy, Don and Carol Murray and Pam Murray Suchoski, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11am on Thursday, September 15th at Green Hills Memorial Park.
