In Loving Memory of Architect Elmer Bigay Mercado
Architect Elmer Bigay Mercado, age 74, peacefully passed away on January 6, 2025, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his beloved family, who will continue to honor his enduring legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
Born to Simeon and Elisa Mercado on December 19, 1950, Elmer's educational journey began at Maryknoll Academy in Lucena City, Philippines. He later pursued higher education at the Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila, Philippines, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture. It was in Manila that he met the love of his life, Victoria. Together, they built a beautiful family with three children: Millicent, Jason, and Eunice.
Elmer's illustrious career spanned numerous industries and countries. He began his professional journey with the Philippine National Railways (PNR) before launching his own architectural firm, designing residential and commercial buildings and supervised construction projects. His career took him to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he worked at Al Thamer Est, planning and designing a subdivision, residential palace, and villas. He also contributed his expertise at Sta. Fe Construction, supervising various civil works projects related to the oil industry. Elmer spent a year in Japan as a quality control foreman for Suzuichi Corp., and later served as a project and operations manager for Toledo Construction Corporation in the Philippines, overseeing pivotal road construction projects across the nation. In his final position, he served proudly as a Sheriff Security Officer for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in the United States.
Outside of his professional achievements, Elmer found immense joy in the simplest pleasures of life. His greatest delight was spending time with his wife and best friend, Victoria, his children, and grandchildren. Elmer also maintained a network of close friendships that spanned decades.
Elmer leaves behind his beloved wife of 51 years, Victoria; his cherished daughters, Millicent Damian (Ronald) and Eunice Cruz (Alain); his devoted son, Jason Mercado; and his adored grandchildren, Joshua Damian and Aiko and Abby Cruz. He is also survived by his sister, Dulce Mercado.
Visitation will start at 1:30 PM onwards on Sunday, January 19, 2025 at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes. Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM. The family invites all who knew and loved Elmer to join them in celebrating his remarkable life and legacy.
