Mildred Elaine Bridges Stallings Seegar, 88, died in Torrance CA at Caring House October 11, 2019 from complications related to leukemia. She was born November 7, 1930 in Prattville AL to Robert Wright Bridges and Grace Reynolds Bridges.
Elaine was a 1951 graduate of Emory University School of Nursing in Atlanta. That same year she married Alton C. Stallings and moved to Alaska where they lived for many years, first in Fairbanks, where she worked as a nurse, then in Seward, where she worked in the accounting department of the Alaska Skill Center. Alton died in 1989. In 1994 she married Elmer (Bernie) Seegar, of Hermosa Beach, who died in 2003.
In addition to her husbands, she is also predeceased by her son, Ronald J. Stallings, and her brother, Robert W. Bridges, Jr.
She is survived by her son, Michael Stallings and his wife Nancy of Anchorage AK; daughter-in-law Wendy Stallings of Seward AK; nine grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Elaine was a Georgia peach who thrived when transplanted to Alaska in 1951. In her 42 years there, she soloed in a Piper Cub; weathered many -60° F Fairbanks winters in a log cabin; was chief cook and bottlewasher (and sometimes skipper) of a 36-foot halibut long-liner out of Seward; while all the time being office manager and accountant for Alton’s construction company. When she moved to Hermosa Beach after marrying Bernie in 1994, she took her accounting and nursing careers into second acts by working for conservator Emily Stuhlbarg and volunteerting at Providence Little Company of Mary. Along the way she took herself, family, and friends on many Princess cruises, where she loved the royal treatment.
She will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, Elaine asked for donations to go to the Seward Community Library in Seward Alaska (
