Eileen Fend, daughter of Mark and Louise Warburton, was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Oct 27, 1927. She grew up on Mark's Ranch in Etna, Utah, a remote, rural community mostly populated by the Warburton brothers and their cows. She learned the meaning of hard work carrying water, chopping and hauling wood for the stove and helping with the cooking, cleaning and doing various other chores. When she was old enough to ride a horse she rode the range with the men often for days at a time. This was particularly tricky since Mark would not let his girls wear pants so Eileen rode in a dress, no side saddle. Her education took place in a one room school house until she moved to Brigham City, Utah, to attend Box Elder Jr. and Sr. High School. In 1944, her sophomore year, Eileen gave birth to her daughter, Pamela (Pam), and then finished her Jr. and Sr. years in one year. She also attended Utah State for one year. When her high school sweet heart, Don Powers, returned from WWII and received his B.S. from Utah State they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. There she worked for Utah's Bureau of Vital statistics and then the Employment Security Commission. In 1952 her second daughter, Teri Colleen Powers, was born and Eileen stayed home, looked after her girls and made jelly rolls. In 1956 Don took a job with the Atomic Energy Commission and moved the family to LA. Eileen worked in LA for a variety of companies, one of which made component parts for missiles. There she became the first woman purchasing agent in the Aero-Space industry. This was no small task since she needed to learn how to read engineering drawings in order to know what to purchase.
She married her second husband Jack Hartman in Oct. 1962. In 1963 she gave birth to her son, Mark Hartman, and chose to stay home with him. While doing so she built a thriving home -based cosmetic business. In Oct., 1968, Jack was killed in a freak industrial accident. After mourning her loss Eileen put on her high heels and went to work in the personnel dept. of Mattel Toy Company. She then chose to venture out on her own and formed "On-Call Personnel." In 1995 she became a licensee of Interim Personnel. On Call, now "Interim Personnel," provided comprehensive staffing solutions, including flexible staffing, full time employment, and consulting services. Eileen's office managed entire workforces as well as having representatives on premises at Mattel and Panasonic. Her daughter Teri and grand daughter, Lissa , participated in the operation of the company. In 2000 Eileen sold the business to Interim and retired. Eileen was the first woman president of the Manhattan Beach Chamber as well as the President. of Women in Management, South Bay Chapter. She was also the chair of the Small Business Association and in that capacity helped to make some significant and beneficial changes to workman's compensation in CA., greatly benefiting small business. After retirement she took an active role in the Marina City Club Home Owners Association.
Eileen was an amazing woman, who fully embraced life and lived it to the fullest. Her motto was "work hard and be kind," but she was not all work and no play; she had an active social life, loved to dance and could ski like a pro. She is survived by her three children, Pamela Powers Greene , Teri Powers, and Mark Hartman. The grand children are Lissa Freed , Casey Greene and Jack Hartman . The great grands are Zack Inzer and Cameron and Jacob Greene. Eileen was also the proud "Mee ma.," to Lissa's husband Jack's two children, Julia and Jonas Freed. Eileen is also survived by her sister Virginia.
Eileen you will be missed.
