With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Edward George Shweiri, who peacefully departed this life on August 3, 2024, at the age of 93. Born in Los Angeles, California, on September 16, 1930, Edward was the son of George and Mary Shweiri, and the younger brother of Lily. His early years were marked by the values of hard work and faith instilled by his loving parents, which he carried with him throughout his life.
Edward spent his early years with his loving aunt Farideh El Akle in Brummana, Lebanon who dearly loved and cared for her dear Eddie. He returned to Los Angeles with his family in 1937 where he would attend Hamilton High School and UCLA. When called for service Edward joined the Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean war.
After serving in the Army, Edward joined Mike Denn in 1955 to establish Denn Engineers, a civil engineering firm in the South Bay. His legacy continues with Denn Engineers and his sons George and Tony who are now partners with Gary Roehl and Mike Walle.
Edward was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Diana. They recently celebrated 65 years of marriage, a partnership characterized by deep affection, mutual respect, and unwavering support. Together, they raised a wonderful family, including their four children: George (Catherine), Tony (Amany), Gabriel (Mitchell), and Nicole. Edward took great pride in his role as a father, always providing encouragement, and unconditional love. His family also includes his treasured grandchildren: Daniel (Erica), Natalie, Jason, Jacob, and Austin. Edward found immense joy in watching them grow and excel, and his presence was a constant source of strength and inspiration in their lives. Each grandchild holds fond memories of their grandfather, who was known for his kindness, wisdom, and playful spirit.
A man of deep faith and profound kindness, Edward was an integral part of the Orthodox community in Southern California. His commitment to his faith was evident through his significant contributions to the establishment and growth of several churches, including St. Luke (Garden Grove), St. Katherine (Redondo Beach), and St. Matthew (Torrance). His dedication to these communities reflected his generous spirit and enduring commitment to serving others.
A service celebrating Edward’s remarkable life will be held at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church on Friday August 9th, with interment to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park in Palos Verdes, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Edward's memory.
Edward’s warmth, generosity, and loving presence will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. His legacy of compassion, strength, and faith will continue to inspire and uplift those fortunate enough to have known him. May his memory be eternal.
