Edward H. Jones Jr.

Edward H. Jones Jr., born July 10, 1922, in Alexandria, Virginia, passed away August 3, 2013, at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance. Because of his father's career as a naval officer, Ed grew up on both coasts of the U.S., as well as in China and the Philippine Islands. Ed served in the U.S. Navy as the quartermaster of a PT boat in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, he obtained his BA, teaching credential, and Master of Arts degree from the University of Southern California. A staunch USC fan, Ed worked as an usher at football games while a student and hosted football picnics for friends for many years.
Ed began his teaching career as an English teacher at Bancroft Junior High School in Long Beach. In 1956, he began his career at El Camino College as an English professor, and in 1973 was appointed Dean of Humanities. A highly respected and well-loved Dean, Ed led a division of over 100 full-time faculty and was responsible for instituting reform of the student registration system.

Ed was proud of his Jones family history. In 1994 he joined the Society of the Cincinnati, a nonprofit educational organization and the nation's oldest patriotic organization. The Society was founded at the close of the American Revolutionary War by officers in the Continental army and navy. Ed attended annual meetings of the Society in Washington D.C. as the representative heir of Captain Strother Jones. An intrepid traveler, Ed's trip destinations included Russia, China, Egypt, Europe, Mexico, and his family home in Virginia.
Ed married Charlotte Stamm in 1948, and together they had three children--Leslie, Edward III (Ned), and Gregory. He was married to Margaret Stigaard from 1963 to 1994.
In 2011 he married his long-time companion, Ann Collette. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann; his children Leslie (Ronald) Reese and Edward H. Jones III; a granddaughter, Alana Reese; a sister-in-law, Christine Collette and brother-in-law, Paul (Debbie) Collette; his cousins, Cynthia Yaroshoff and Antoinette (Robert) Mennell, and other relatives and close friends.
Ed participated in the Pulmonary Education Program (PEP) at Little Company of Mary Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the PEP PIONEERS, 20929 Hawthorne Blvd., Torrance, CA 90503, Attn: Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
