Edward Andrew "Eddie" Bobic

October 5, 1926 — October 9, 2016

Edward Andrew ("Eddie") Bobic was born on October 5th, 1926, in East Chicago, Indiana to John and Antonia Bobich. He was the youngest in a family of six. Following high school he joined the Navy toward the end of WWII and served aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise as an electrician.

After discharge he settled in San Pedro where his parents had moved from Indiana. On September 29, 1947 he married Mary Rokov (his life long companion of 69 years) at the old Mary Star of the Sea Church on 9th Street. He passed away peacefully at home succumbing to pneumonia which plagued him multiple times over the past few years. He is survived by son John (Ruth) Bobic, daughter Sandra (Duane) Calkins, grandchildren Joanna (Andre) Esperias, Joshua Bobic, Jeremy (Carlene) Calkins, Nathan (Leslie) Calkins, Daniel (Kimmie) Calkins, great-grandchildren Micah, Katie, Sadie, Ashley, Kaylie, Dane, Nathan, Jacob, Landon and numerous nephews and nieces.

He started married life as a fisherman, later worked for a local barber serving up crew cuts to the youth, opened his own shop a short time until he was sponsored into the Longshoreman's Union, a job he loved, sharing in the fellowship of guys whose camaraderie he esteemed.

Family was paramount and an extension of who Ed was. He was devoted to his parents and in-laws "Jake" and Simica Rokov and their family. He was personally invested in the lives of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces, and extremely proud.

A great dancer, Ed and Mary enjoyed the Elks Club, Dalmatian Club, and Alpine Village, which allowed them to express their talent and joy of life with friends and loved ones.

Active in Peck Park and Hi Neighbors seniors he and Mary were able to travel all over California and the southwest and enjoy great times of fellowship.

Ed was a generous and congenial host, as well as a good cook in his own right. He liked to experiment making ordinary dishes better. For example, he tweaked a standard "slav" sauerkraut into a dish that could stand alone as a meal in itself, and was the envy of anyone who tasted it. One Sicilian neighbor begged for the recipe of his pasta fagioli, a thicker ham hock version than the Italian. He grew his own vegetables, some of them providing the ingredients for his beloved "zelia" until physically unable.

Ed loved local sports especially San Pedro High and Mary Star football, and never missed a game or event when his kids and grandkids were involved. He was a die-hard Angels fan until his passing.

Ed loved Pedro because it was a true community where you could always run into someone you knew. He had a good life with the many great friends and family whom he loved.
