Edith Anderson

August 17, 1930 — March 31, 2012

At almost eighty-wo years of age, a beautiful lady left us on March 31st, 2012. Her name was Edith (Cowart) Anderson. She was the widow of Elmer (aka Andy) Anderson. Edith died with her only child, a daughter, Peggy (Anderson) Radeke in attendance. The end came after a long battle with illness and pain. Suffering after she fell more than a year ago, her hip was diagnosed as inoperable, due to another illness. The pain I'm sure, had been truly unimaginable only just managed by medication and prayer. Edith, the oldest daughter of Dora and Elbert Cowart, originally from Arkansas, outlived both her parents and sadly her two younger siblings, Wilbert Cowart and Margaret (Cowart) Peterson. However, she is survived by a half-brother, Jessie, and two older half-sisters, Claudia and Lenora, the offspring of Dora's brief marriage to Claude Punneo. Though there were no grandchildren, Edith was blessed with many nieces and nephews, their spouses and children. Elmer, Edith's husband of almost sixty years, had also come from a large family that consisted of seven brothers and sisters, with several sons, daughters and offspring. Edith, also had many friends. She was often teased for never meeting a stranger. With her friendly southern charm, people young and old were naturally drawn to her. Being raised on a small farm outside of the little town of DeQueen, Arkansas, Edith grew up with a love of nature. In her lifetime, she had shared her life with many animals and pets of all descriptions. The love of nature, (gardening, particularly), had been learned from her maternal grandfather, Heinrich Hermann and her own father Elbert Cowart. Their combined gift, a passion for nature, was passed forward to Edith's only child. Peggy who often speaks of the hours she shared with her Grandpa, as a little girl walking, talking, and questioning her grandpa's great knowledge of all the things that grew in his large backyard garden. These were happy times which were sometimes shared when Edith came out to help and to enjoy Grandpa's Garden too. At the age of thirteen, Edith had moved with the family when her dad had been drafted for duty in the U.S. Navy. He was given an early honorable discharge when it was discovered he suffered severe heart problems. The family then moved to Iowa, and then returned to Arkansas. The memories and thoughts of California brought the family back in hopes of a better future for them all. Edith, and her two younger siblings attended school in Lomita, where Edith had graduated from Narbonne High School. She married Elmer, who had been her longtime high school sweetheart. They settled also in Lomita and raised their only child, Peggy. There have been many people and places that shared Edith's life. She will be remembered and cherished. The beauty of her may have left us here, but the memories of her that belong to us shall be contained within our hearts; our remembrances will be shared and passed on to newer generations by words and deeds of us all. Thank you Mom; God bless you.
