Douglas Andrew Hellmer passed away on January 21, 2021 exactly a week after his 72nd birthday. He was born in Urbana, IL to Leo A. and Adeline Hellmer.
Doug graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. He taught for a few years before volunteering for a two-year assignment with the Peace Corps. He was assigned to Jamaica, W.I. As fate would have it, he met Donna Kameoka another volunteer who was to become his life partner. They were married on August 26, 1976. His life with Donna was made perfect with the birth of their daughter Erin Renee who was his pride and joy.
Upon retirement from an automotive career, Doug enjoyed a life of travel with Donna. After many road trip adventures, he discovered the joys of cruising. He and Donna travelled to many destinations which included Alaska, Mexico, Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, Australia, the UK, the Caribbean and many more. Doug loved cruising especially since it provided a stress-free experience from driving!
Doug spent time between cruises doing woodworking projects. He built a murphy bed with side shelves, a 4-drawer dresser, wooden coasters and many other items he gifted to family. He also enjoyed visits to Texas to spend time with daughter Erin Renee and her family.
Doug was the most wonderful husband, father and grandfather who will be missed. He is survived by his wife Donna Kameoka Hellmer, daughter and son-in-law Erin Renee and Michael Perry, grandchildren Jaden, Mikey and Jaxson Perry, and brother Leo F. Hellmer.
He will be interred at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the charity of your choice in the name of Douglas Hellmer.
