Dorothy Lucille Obert

July 2, 1943 — January 3, 2014

Dorothy's parents were from Nebraska and after they married and moved west, Dorothy was born in Longview Washington. After a few years the family moved to Bakersfield, where Dorothy spent her formative years. She was the middle of three daughters.

Dorothy was an active child and into everything. In high school it was several clubs, MYF, playing the cello, and her senior year she was editor of the yearbook. She continued her education at Bakersfield Junior College and then San Francisco State. It was in junior college that she met Ron Obert on an Easter week geology field trip. They married their senior year in college, and last year passed the 50 year mark.

When their daughter Susan was born, Dorothy was a stay at home mom for the next 16 years. The small family moved from the bay area to Torrance in 1967. Dorothy was active in support of Susan's activities such a ballet lessons, Girl Scouts, Bobby Sox Softball, and on the board of the Calle Mayor PTA. Many of the family's pleasant recollections of these years involve family vacations and two extensive trips to the east coast.

Susan's junior year in high school Dorothy took a job with Pertec, an early computer company. Soon she was working for the Daniel Freeman Hospital credit union, and this prompted her to take the sequence of accounting classes at Torrance Adult School. Soon she was an aid in adult school classes, and then after a sequence of classes at Dominguez Hills, she became a certificated teacher. She was a computer applications expert, and helped a couple of generations of South Bay adults develop skills with Microsoft Office and similar applications. In later years she was the teacher in charge of the Adult School's Career and Technical Education classes. The positive implications of this for society gave her much personal satisfaction.

Dorothy, although seemingly in good health, had a stoke New Year's Day and died two days later. Family services have been held at Green Hills Cemetery.

Survived by: husband Ron Obert of Torrance, daughter Susan Obert (Andy Raugust) of Stockton, sister Cathy Findley of Pacific Grove, and Cathy's son David Holodiloff of Monterey.

A memorial service is to be held Friday January 24th at noon, at the First United Methodist Church, 243 South Broadway, Redondo Beach Ca 90277. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
