Dorothy was born November 04, 1941 in Crowley, LA. She was the fifteenth child of Vincent and Doris Garrett. She enjoyed a happy and productive childhood; her big sister Geraldine was her protector from bullies. In 1960 with the help of Ernestine Washington, relocated to Los Angeles, CA and graduated from Centennial High School. At Centennial she became lifelong friends with Rosie James, Jessie James and Mimi Solomon. On November 04, 1962 Dorothy married Franklin Melton and started their 59 year. marriage. In 1972 Dorothy received Associate In Arts degree from Los Angeles Harbor College. In 1976 Dorothy received the degree of Bachelor of Arts with a major in Social Welfare. Dorothy careers included Administrative Assistant at Orthopedic Hospital, managing the Daily Breeze Newspaper distribution in Palo Del Amo Wood neighborhood and managing the family real estate business. Dorothy raised three children, all boys. In 1994 Franklin Sr retired from his job and help with the family business. Dorothy was a charter member Qt Kings Way church. Dorothy and Beverly Gibson started the Kings Way Senior Potluck luncheons and that was a big hit. Also, on Communion Sunday, Dorothy would visit the home of a church member who was not able to attend. When Kings Way wanted to build its own Church rather than rent Dorothy stepped up to provide the financing.
Dorothy faced her health challenges head on with pride determination and dignity. Her Hobbies included playing Uno reading and discussing politics and current events. Dorothy supported national politics and when President Barrack Obama won the Presidency in 2009 his committee invited her to his Inauguration and she attended. Dorothy leaves a legacy of love, a strong work ethic, kindness and a strong Christian faith and the love for her family.
She is survived by: sister, Carolyn Jones (Oklahoma City) and, brother Gerald Garrett (Crowley, Louisiana); devoted husband - Franklin Melton Sr., two sons- Darrell Garrett (Denise); Kevin Melton; five grandchildren- Cortland Garrett (Alondra); Vincent Garrett (Gwen); Natalie & Nicole Garrett; Brian Williams and great grandson; Grayson Garrett.
