Doris Geneva Stoney Kendrick

June 25, 1929 — April 12, 2013

Doris Geneva Kendrick was born on June 25, 1929 in Bishop, Texas. She was the youngest of nine children born to Isaac and Susie Stoney whom preceded her in death. Doris was also preceded in death by all nine of her siblings. The Stoney children were raised in a hardworking family with a deep spiritual belief in God. Doris accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and remained a faithful Christian for her entire life. Doris received her formal education in the public schools of Corpus Christi, Texas. She graduated from Bishop College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and was one of the First African Americans to receive a teaching Credential in Elementary – Special Education from the University of Texas. She started her professional teaching career in Corpus Christi, Texas as an Elementary and Junior High School Special Education Teacher. She continued her teaching career in Los Angeles, California as a substitute teacher at a host of schools throughout greater Los Angeles. While in elementary school, Doris and five other childhood friends formed a group called "The Big Six." The Big Six have remained life-long friends for over seventy years and have shared countless memories, and weathered many storms together. In 1953, Doris married the love of her life, Jesse Odie Kendrick who preceded her in death in 2011, after 57 years of marriage. This union produced two beautiful children, Derrick and Karen. The Kendrick's raised their family in Harbor City, California where both Derrick and Karen attended Nathaniel Narbonne High School. Following the years she took off to have a family, she became a permanent teacher with LAUSD in 1971. Doris taught for 18 years at Benjamin Banneker Special Education Center in Compton, California, and retired after 38 years as a Special Education Teacher in 1989. Doris was very involved in many organizations and activities including: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, TAO, Served as Anti-Basileus, Co-Chaired two Debutante Balls, Chaired the Community Service Com for 10 years, Chaired the Blacked Family Com, Chaired the Pearl Foundation, Sang with TAO Choral Groups, Regional Choruses and the AKA / Delta Martin Luther King (MLK) Commemorative Concerts for a number of years. Doris was a very proud and dedicated member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, where she chaired many special events and activities. Doris wore Pink and Green like a badge of honor. She was a member of the Black Women's Forum, NAACP, and the Retiree Support Group of Avalon Gardens Elementary School. Doris was faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Wilmington for more than 47 years. Her true passion was singing, which she enjoyed immensely. She sang in the choir, served on the church council and a host of other groups over the years. Her faithfulness and dedication to her church was a huge part of her life, and she served on every committee with pride and enthusiasm. Doris was called home to be with the Lord on a quiet Friday night in her home, surrounded by her family. Doris leaves to cherish her memory her eldest child Derrick (wife Valerie), grandchildren Jessica (husband Anthony Bartholomew), Ian Kendrick and Allison Kendrick. Her daughter Karen (husband Nathaniel A. Lumpkin II), grandchildren Mariah Lumpkin, Breanna Lumpkin and Nathaniel A. Lumpkin III, better known as "Trey." Two great-grandchildren, Mia Rose and Madison Raye Bartholomew. One Brother-in-Law, Charles Kendrick and family, a host of nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, family, friends, First United Methodist Church family of Wilmington and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. The Viewing is Sunday, April 21, 2013 from 3:00-8:00 pm. The Home Going Celebration Service is Monday, April 22, 2013 at 11:00 am at Green Hills Memorial Park, 27501 S. Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, Ca 90275
