Dennis passed away unexpectedly on September 9, 2015 in Torrance, CA. He was born January 9, 1940 to Milton and Virginia (Burkhart) Colmerauer (both now deceased) and spent all of his 75 years as a resident of the South Bay in Redondo Beach and Torrance. He was an alumnus of Redondo Union High School where he competed and won Bay League medals in many swimming competitions. Dennis married his wife, Janet in 1963 and they recently celebrated their 52nd Wedding Anniversary. Dennis loved the ocean and the outdoors and was an active skin and scuba diver, fisherman, boat owner and hunter. He traveled to many western states including Alaska for fishing and hunting all varieties of birds and game and believed that natural game meat was God's perfect health food. His love of hunting and fishing expanded to Canada, New Zealand and his favorite place of all, to Africa, where he made many friends and traveled and hunted with his wife, Janet, many times for over 16 years. Dennis was generous to his friends and family, and providing for his family was his most important lifetime goal.


Dennis retired as a Captain with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in 1999 after 35 years of service, beginning with Palos Verdes Estates Fire Department in 1964. At retirement, he was at Station 56, County Battalion 14, on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. In addition to his many rescue and fire prevention duties with the fire department, he was a Training Officer specializing in cliff and multistory building rescues, an arson investigator, certified first aid instructor, fire marshal and served on the board of several Fireman's Associations. He was also an Armed Forces Veteran, serving with the United States Navy in the early 1960's, completing duty in the southern Atlantic including Africa, the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, eastern coast of South America and especially, Cuba.


Preceded in death by his youngest son, David, his immediate surviving family are; his wife, Janet (Murray), oldest son, Andy, sister, Karen Collins, sisters-in-law, Alice Guerra of Rancho Cucumonga, Susan Murray of Ventura, Sandy Murray of Yucaipa, brothers-in-law Dan Klute (Melissa) of Colorado Springs, Bob Murray (Angela) of Anchorage, Alaska, father-in -law, Jean Keith Murray, Sr., Kenny Lake, Alaska as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Keith Murray of Ventura and Benny Collins of Torrance.


He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.


Memorial service will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park Chapel, 27501 S. Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 with burial at sea at a later date.
