Deann Arlene Potter

May 16, 1939 — February 11, 2016

Deann A. Potter passed away peacefully February 11, 2016 at Torrance Memorial Medical Center as the result of complications from a long battle with Leukemia; her family was at her bed side. Born of Minnie Jane Smith Singer and Edgar Horner Singer May 16, 1939 in Johnstown, PA, Deann was the youngest of 10 siblings; two sisters, Mary and Ilene and seven brothers, Calvin, Melvin, Ronald, Evan, Bernard, Eddie and Robert; all have predeceased her. Following the close death of both of her parents at a young age, Deann was raised by her second-eldest sister, Ilene Rininger and her husband, Jim, along with their own 3 children James, Jeffrey and Linda. She attended grammar school in Johnstown, PA and graduated from Conemaugh Township High School in Davidsville, PA in 1957. Following graduation, she joined her youngest brother, Robert, and his family in Lennox, CA. Having been trained in office work, she soon found work in the County Bureau of Public Assistance and later joined Garrett AiResearch as a secretary where she met her future husband Vernon (Vern) Potter; in 1964 they were married. They made their home in Torrance where they resided for the next 52 years raising their two children, Chris Alan Potter and Dana Leigh Hicks. Deann soon found that her past-time of cross stitching led her to an avocation and she joined The Torrance Craftsmen's Guild where she met many talented friends. These same friends helped broaden her interests in crafting and encouraged her to lead the organization as their Faire Chairman and President for over a decade. Deann is survived by her husband, Vern, their two children, Chris and Dana and 9 direct and extended family grandchildren--Nicholas, Brei, William, Heather, Giniel, Harrison, Madisyn, Katie and Kristen, and her sister-in-law Hermina Singer, in addition to innumerable cousins, nephews and nieces and a legion of very close friends, both local and across the nation, developed during their many transcontinental travels over the years.

A Celebration of Life and Memorial will be held in the Green Hills Memorial Chapel on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 1 pm followed immediately by a reception in the Cove Suite, next door. Deann will be laid to rest in The Pacifica Addition at Green Hills Memorial Park, in Niche F 841. The family asks that in lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions in her name to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the charity of your choice.
