David Buxton

August 26, 1940 — October 7, 2023

David Emerson Buxton passed away peacefully at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California, on
October 7, 2023 of pancreatic cancer, at the age of 83.

David was born in Washington, DC on August 26, 1940 to Rex Ernest Buxton and Phyllis Swift Buxton. He
is survived by his loving wife Ann, his daughter Joya and granddaughter Vyta, his stepchildren Brooks
Vogt (Christie) and Leslee Dunnigan, their children Bryce and Brendan Dunnigan and Brooks Vogt Ill, and
his brothers Wayne and Robert “Bob” Buxton and sister Priscilla Buxton (Joe Mundie).

David loved to learn through formal schooling and varied work experiences. He graduated from the
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1962 and served five years of active duty as an officer in the
Air Force providing logistical support during the Vietnam War. He found this work demanding and
interesting. After his honorable discharge, he served in the California Air National Guard for 15 years,
retiring as a Colonel. After moving to California, David completed graduate studies in real estate at UCLA
and earned an MBA from University of Southern California. He worked for Union Bank for ten years,
rising to the position of Vice President. He then worked with George Smith Partners and most recently
owned and managed two medical buildings, TORMED, near Torrance Memorial Hospital.

David was at his best when he was able to make use of his innate entrepreneurial talent. This talent
became evident when, at the age of 17, he put a $2.00 ad in Hot Rod Magazine and sold Ford auto parts
around the country. He was not afraid to take risks and took pleasure in using his knowledge of real
estate and his negotiating skills. Work was central to David’s life, to the point that he said, “I never
worked a day in my life.” Part of the pleasure he took in work was the opportunity to work with and
mentor his partners, associates, and tenants.

In addition to his love of family and work, David enjoyed traveling the world. He had eclectic taste in the
arts, supporting classical music and opera performances while enjoying country music, and he was
active in a wide range of civic organizations, including the South Bay Lincoln Club, the Military Officers
Association of America, and the South Coast Botanic Garden. David also supported local and national
political candidates.

All who knew David will miss his energy, his ability to share knowledge, and his generosity of time spent
with you. He was truly one of a kind.

In lieu of flowers, people can contribute to: Children’s Hospital Los Angeles ( https://www.chla.org/ ),
