Passed away at his home in Rancho Palos Verdes on March 24, 2014 at the age of 92. Dan, as he was known to his friends, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, but spent most of his life in the San Pedro area. Dan was the third of five rambunctious boys - Verner, Robert, Richard and Douglas (Verner, Robert and Richard preceded him in death). Dan attended and graduated from San Pedro High School Summer Class of 1940 as a football star. During World War II, he served in the National Guard, Merchant Marines and U.S. Navy. After leaving the military, Dan had a long career as a local longshoreman and was a member of I.L.W.U Local 13 for 38 years. Dan also farmed an almond orchard in Chowchilla, California. Dan was a lifetime member of the San Pedro Elks Lodge, participating in its activities for 65 years.
Dan married his High School sweetheart, Alma Harold, in 1942 and had two sons, Dennis and John. After 40 years of marriage, Alma passed away. Lucky in love and very charming, Dan reconnected at a High School reunion with Harriet Brown, a former classmate. They married and spent 26 years together until his death.
Dan was a generous man with a great sense of humor, who loved to play practical jokes and spend time with family and friends, often recounting stories of his past to the delight of his listeners. A man who loved a good game, Dan enjoyed golfing and played a competitive game of cribbage. An avid gardener, he especially enjoyed raising Beefsteak tomatoes and his almonds. Dan had a real affection for dogs and had many loving canine companions over the years. He loved to travel and adventure with family.
Dan is survived by his wife, Harriet, her four children, Donald, Lenore, Carol and Joann, his two sons, Dennis and John and their wives, LaVon and Cindy. Dan was adored by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be sorely missed, but held with great esteem and fondness in their hearts and memories.
