Clifford Erven

June 22, 1922 — October 28, 2020

“Growing old is no more than a bad habit which a busy man has no time to form.” -- Masonic saying

On Wednesday, October 28 after 98 years of love, laughter and sacrifices, Cliff passed away at his home in Long Beach, CA.
Cliff was born in San Pedro and spent most of his life in Wilmington, CA. He graduated from Banning High School and received his B.S. degree in Police Science from Cal State, Long Beach.

Cliff served in the AAF from Oct 1942 through Dec 1945 as a carbine marksman. He married Catherine Norton and spent the next 64 years building a life that was full of outstanding dedication to the community.

Cliff served with the LA Sheriff’s Department for 27 years. His memorable career moments included driving a black and white cab to the hotel that serves 3 meals a day. This was a joke that only our family understood and laughed every time he told it. Cliff also experienced 6 days of chaos and destruction during the Watts Riots.

He then spent the next 10 years working for Pacific Bell climbing up poles as a service technician. Cliff always laughed about the senior pole jockey training the young guys.

Cliff retired from the CA Senior Legislature after 14 years of service. In his capacity as a senior Senator, he proposed to have the handicapped logo on the CA Senior Identification Card, but it failed in the State Assembly. He and his wife were advocates for seniors in the justice system. On top of all this work, the couple loved to travel. Their travel company, Catracks, catered to senior trips across the US and Canada. On a trip to Switzerland, he fell in love with cuckoo clocks.

Cliff was a Mason, Shriner, and active with the American Legion and Elks club. He had a love of animals which included he and his wife rescuing tortoises.

Outdoor memorial services will be held at Green Hills Mortuary, 27501 S. Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275 on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2020 at 2 p.m. Masks are required, and social distancing will be practiced.
