Ciro Amalfitano, better known as "Jerry", was born on February 18, 1950 in San Pedro. He attended Fermin Lasuen High School and later attended Loyola Marymount University, where he was a star oarsman on the rowing team. He was a dedicated and motivated coach to the Loyola rowing teams long after graduating college. For more than 35 years, Jerry influenced the lives of many while working as a civil engineer and project manager with Southern California Edison. One of Jerry's proudest achievements was establishing "The Field of Dreams" soccer park for the town of San Pedro. Jerry was an avid learner, but more so, he was an inspirational mentor. He lived with the notion of being "the best that you can be." Jerry's big smile and hearty laugh could light up a room. He was incredibly proud of his Italian heritage, and he was a true family man. Jerry loved nothing more than being with his family around the dinner table, as laughter and stories were shared. Jerry passed away, surrounded by family and love, on the evening of January 10, 2015. Some of Jerry's last words to his loved ones were, "Thank you all for being my family." Jerry is survived by his daughter, Natalie; son, Vincent; fiancé, Susan Schafer; and sisters, Frances Flett and Anna Hill; as well as many more family members, friends, and colleagues. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at Green Hills Mortuary, from 3-8 p.m. Funeral service is on Friday, January 16th, at Mary Star of the Sea Church, at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center in care of Dr. Gary Schiller or Loyola Marymount University Rowing Association, in honor of Jerry Amalfitano.
