Charles Yang, engineer and family man, departed peacefully of natural causes on February 13, 2020. He was 80 years old.
Growing up in post-World War 2 Taiwan, Charles never imagined that he would live the life laid out for him. Intelligent, quick witted and armed with a knowing smile, he loved to dissect and engage in dialectic around any topic he encountered. These attributes led him to study Electrical Engineering at the National Taiwan University and eventually to the United States. His plan to stay in the United States was temporary. He just was going to pursue graduate studies at the University of Missouri then return to Taiwan to help run his family’s electric fan business. But he ended up meeting Sachiko, the love of his life, in Los Angeles, and settled in Palos Verdes Estates, California. With Sachiko, he enjoyed 50 years of marriage and 25 years of retirement. They traveled the world but always returned home, a place he characterized as the “best place in the world to be”. Besides being husband to Sachiko, he was the loving father to Daniel, father-in-law to Peggy, and grandfather to Timothy.
In his final days, he became his own doctor, trying to uncover new methods to ameliorate his various ailments. He also immersed himself in new real estate ventures, the latest technologies, and the achievements of Timothy, who he was most proud of. Even when the end was close at hand, Charles never liked to speculate on what happened after death, but if there is life after death, it would be an absolute certainty that he would be hard at work trying to understand it.
