Charles Albert Smith

Charles “Chuck” Albert Smith, Jr., age 92, passed away on May 6, 2018, surrounded by his children and many of his grandchildren. He was born in San Pedro on June 2, 1925 and his family were active members of the First Christian Church in San Pedro. He served in the Navy during WWII, 1943-1946. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Chuck joined the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1947. Chuck and his wife, Mary Ellen, followed their children to Rolling Hills Covenant Church in 1974 and soon became members. After he retired from the Fire Department in 1980, they moved to a home in Lomita Pines where he lived for the past 38 years, just 5 miles from the home where he was born in San Pedro. In 1982 Chuck began working for Rolling Hills Covenant Church. He would have this position for more than 18 years, retiring for the 2nd time in 2000. His last years were spent caring for his ailing wife and spending birthdays at Disneyland riding Splash Mountain with his adult children, the last time at age 88.

He is survived by 4 children, Sharon, Shirley, Susan and Charles (Buzz), 17 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Burial will be private at Green Hills Memorial Park. Services will be May 18th at noon at Rolling Hills Covenant Church, 2221 Palos Verdes Drive North, Rolling Hills Estates.
