Charles Robert DeGraffenreid, age 90, died Saturday, December 12, 2015 at his daughter's home in Huntington Beach, CA.
Charles was born January 18, 1925 in Chickasha, OK to Henry Grady DeGraffenreid and Bessie Carson DeGraffenreid, and had 2 younger siblings, Florence and Don. Following the death of his mother when he was 12 years old, he lived in Oklahoma City and Texas before settling in southern California and making it his long-time home. He attended Van Nuys High School and worked in a hatchery until graduating from high school in June, 1943.
In August, 1943, Charles joined the United States Marines and was stationed at Peleliu Island in the Palau Islands during World War 2. After receiving an honorable discharge in December, 1945 Charles returned to southern California.
In 1948 he started working for the Department of Water and Power, and eventually was promoted to being a lineman, which he was very proud of. He worked for the DWP for 30 years, before retiring, and then going to work at Valley Cable Vision in 1982.
Charles married Mary Paulson in January, 1952 and over the next several years, they welcomed 4 children, living in Van Nuys and then Reseda. In January, 1999 he and Mary moved to his daughter's house in Huntington Beach, where he lived until his death.
Charles loved to go camping, and fishing, and through his lifetime owned several cabins in Big Bear City and Fawnskin. Later in life, he enjoyed playing cards, was an avid beanie baby and giraffe collector, and loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Charles is survived by his son, Chuck Jr. (Sharon), daughter Carol (Vinod), son Gary (Terri) and son Daryl (Kim), as well as 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and his beloved cat, Sidney. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, sister Florence, and brother Don.
We would like to thank Dr. Gregory Katz, Dr. Minh Nguyen, Dr. Richard Haskell, the team at the Newport Orthopedic Institute, and Seasons Hospice for their extraordinary care.
