Carlos (Charlie) Gonzalez, a long time Wilmington, CA resident passed away December 22, 2011, at Sunnyside Convalescent Home, Torrance, CA at the age of 82.
Charlie was born January 6, 1929, in Wilmington, CA, to Candelario and Beatrice Gonzalez.
At the age of 12, Charlie proudly began working as a paperboy, delivering to Wilmington residents from Marine Avenue to Neptune Avenue. Through his efforts, he learned he could accomplish anything he set his mind to do.
He attended San Pedro High School, where he excelled as a star of the varsity basketball team. He graduated with his class of 1947. He would later become a resident in San Pedro's South Shores community, where he lived for many years and loved his home.
Charlie briefly attended college before deciding he would embark on a new path, serving in the United States Air Force. After serving his country and receiving an honorable discharge, Charlie returned to Wilmington to run Cande's Liquor store, a family business started by his father and long time Wilmington businessman Candelario Gonzalez. He then went on to successfully manage "Charlie's Liquor" store, on Avalon Blvd., Wilmington CA.
At the youthful age of 53, Charlie began a second career as a Longshoreman with the ILWU Local 13, where he was best known as "Charlie the Bomber". He worked the docks for almost 13 years, retiring in 1994 at 65 years of age.
Charlie was an active member of the San Pedro Elks Lodge, as well as a Mason. He was an avid sports fan with a passion for boxing and football. If there was a big fight on pay per view, you could be sure Charlie was watching! He enjoyed college as well as professional football, and was a particular fan of the USC Trojans. Fight-on Charlie!
Charlie is survived by his father Candelario Gonzalez, 105, sisters Helen Gonzalez Saldana, Vida R. Gonzalez Milla, Aida Morales, Eva Gonzalez Miramontes, Stella Gonzalez and brothers Carlos Castro, Manual Amaro, and Hiram Gonzalez in addition to numerous nephews and nieces.
