It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, Carl W. French of San Pedro, California. He was born on November 15, 1929 and passed on November 30, 2016, at the age of 87. Carl is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Wanda "Sharon" Davis and their 8 children, Carla (Pete) Hayes, June (Dominic) Gregorio, Kelly (Gloria) French, Kathy (Bruce) Burkhart, Barbara (Mark) White, Allen (Dianne) Crostic, Debbie (Earl) Kemper, and Daniel (Christina) Crostic. Carl has 23 grandchildren (and 8 spouses), and 16 great-grandchildren, who adored their Grandfather. He is also survived by his sister, Annie (Bob) Shupert, who affectionately called her big brother, "Duke Baby."
Carl was born in Moline, Illinois and attended school in Coal Valley where he became a Boy Scout and enjoyed playing ice hockey. Between 1951 and 1953 Carl proudly served his country in Korea as a "Forward Observer" in the 3rd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army Artillery Unit. Carl's early life and service in the military helped him develop valuable qualities that would shape his character from that time forward. He was a man of honor and integrity and he was fully committed to his family and those he loved.
Carl was a dedicated employee who retired from Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) after 28 years of hard work. He enjoyed his association many wonderful co-workers, who would become his life-long friends. Everything he did in his life was for the benefit of his wife, children and extended family. Even when he was relaxing by the lake, with a fishing pole in his hand, he was often teaching his children or grandchildren all of his best tricks for catching catfish. He rarely did anything that didn't involve a family member in one way or another. In a very gentle way, he instilled confidence in his children and grandchildren and did his best to prepare them for whatever life might bring.
His other interests included boxing and NASCAR, and he loved country music. Rocky Marciano, Jeff Gordon, and Waylon Jennings were his all-time favorites.
His absence in our lives will be felt every day and we will cherish our memories of him forever.
Services will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 with a brief viewing from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a grave-side service at 12:00 noon at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes.
