Bonnie Kay Taft passed away on April 22, 2015 at the age of 64, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born February 16, 1951 in Los Angeles, California to Robert and Dorothy Perkins Davis. She was the second of five daughters. Bonnie attended Calvary Baptist Day School. Her first grade teacher, Mrs Isaacs, made such an impression on Bonnie that she decided that very year to become a teacher. Bonnie never waivered from that childhood dream. Growing up she was an active member of Gardena Bible Church; she also enjoyed playing the piano. Bonnie graduated from Brethren High School in 1969.
Bonnie attended John Brown University in Siloam Springs, AR, and was followed there by several of her sisters. She graduated JBU in 1973 with a teaching degree and moved to Jasper, Missouri to start a family and begin her first teaching job with a kindergarten class. Bonnie, along with her husband and two children moved to Los Angeles in 1981. Bonnie began her long association with Los Angeles Unified School District in 1991. She first taught pre-school and kindergarten levels at 156th Street Elementary School. She went back to school nights at CSUDH to get her Masters Degree. Later she became the Vice Principle at Crestwood Elementary School. After achieving her Administration Credential Bonnie became the Principle at Point Fermin Elementary School. She has been there for about 9 years. Bonnie wrote a grant that got her school extra funds to upgrade the schools library. She made it an inspiring focus for all the students. Point Fermin Elementary will be naming their library in her honor. During Bonnie's career, she had a positive impact on many lives from students to colleagues and made many friends along the way.
Bonnie loved to dry flowers and make her own soap. In the 80s' for a short time, Bonnie started a mail order business called "Lady Bon Bon's Sweet Shop, Gifts of Distinction and Sundry Items". Bonnie was a devoted member of Rolling Hills Covenant Church. Since her mother's passing, Bonnie has been devoted to accompanying her father to church on Saturday nights. She was a proud member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. When her children were young, she devoted time to her childrens cultural education through native specific community classes and had fun attending pow-wows with her entire family.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her mother Dorothy Davis. She is survived by her two children- Sasha and husband Jeremy Perkins of Santa Clarita, CA, and Dallas and wife Lisa Taft of Palos Verdes, CA; four grandchildren – Davis, Sader, Phoenix and Cosette, all of whom were Bonnie's greatest pride and joy. She is also survived by her 88 year old father, Robert Davis; four sisters – Mary (Michael) Jackson; Terri Maioriello, Diana Wakeman and Sally Ausborne; ex-husband Michael Taft, and many nieces and nephews. Bonnie will be greatly missed by her entire family.
