Bill was born in New Merkle Alabama, now known as Cahaba Heights, to Mamie Bearden and Aubrey Hendrix. His father was a coal miner at Concord Mine. Bill has 3 sisters Sue, Linda, Jeanette and an older brother Obie. He graduated from Shades Valley High School in Homewood Alabama.
While in high school Bill worked driving school bus. After graduation he joined the Air Force. Thus began his aviation career in the 1950's. After service in the Air Force, Bill was hired by the premiere airline, Pan American. He had 33 years of service with Pan Am before going on to the FAA, where he retired in Feb 2006. Dad always had exceptional work ethic and loved aviation.
In 2004, Bill was a recipient of the prestigious Charles Taylor "Master Mechanic" Award. The Charles Taylor Award is an honor presented by the United States Federal Aviation Administration, in honor of Charles Taylor, the first aviation mechanic in powered flight. The award recognizes the lifetime accomplishments of senior aviation mechanics. To be eligible for the award, a person must have 50 years in aviation maintenance as an accredited mechanic and be an FAA-certificated mechanic for a minimum of 30 year.
Bill leaves behind a beautiful wife of 30 years, Toniann Hendrix, four children Bill Jr, Bruce, Paul and Shanda Hendrix, four grandchildren Jeremy and Ryan Hendrix, Brandi Sleasman and Lenee Thompson, and five great grandchildren Taybor, Alexis, Paisley, Sylas and Miles, also his sisters Sue Lawson, Linda McGough and Jeanette Burton, along with their husbands and many loving nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Our father will forever be remembered as a proud yet humbly man. Who had exceptional work ethics and loved aviation.
