Betty Du Chemin Frey

May 4, 1923 — July 8, 2016

May 4, 1923 - July 8, 2016 Betty du Chemin Frey was a long time resident of Manhattan and Hermosa Beach. She passed away quietly, July 8, in her home in Newport Beach. Betty du Chemin Frey was born in Denver Colorado in 1923. She was the daughter of William Eugene du Chemin, a filmmaker from Prince Edward Island, Canada. Her mother was Audrey du Chemin, former editor of the "Loma Linda Alumni Journal", and a correspondent and news editor for the "El Monte Herald" and "Los Angeles Times". An avid writer and educator, Betty graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1940 from Huntington Park High School. She received numerous writing awards, including the Los Angeles Times Young Writers Award. She attended USC on an academic scholarship and received a BA in education, followed by a MA in education from Pepperdine. She was honored to teach English to eager students at Carson High School until her retirement in 1990. Betty was married to Dick Frey who predeceased her in 2005. They moved to the beach cities after World War II and lived in Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, where they raised three daughters. Her loving daughters, JoAnne Perkins, Carol Frey and Jeannine Frey Culp, survive Betty. Her grandsons, James Perkins, Scott Perkins, Michael Perkins, Jake Feder, Rick Feder, Matt Culp and Richard Andrew Culp, will miss her intellect, conversation, perception, accurate advice and love. Betty will be interred with her husband of over 50 years, Dick Frey, at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a favorite charity in her memory.
