Benjamin Boyd Martin, 38, of San Pedro, CA passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2020. Benjamin was born on July 25, 1981 in Mt. Kisco, NY to his parents, James and Diana Martin. He is survived by his beloved wife Katherine Martin and two children; Jackson (3) and Madeline (1) as well as his four siblings; Katie Stewart (husband Jeff), Mary Clarin (husband Dan), Allison Vining (husband Drew), and Matthew Martin. He is also survived by his grandparents Eldon and Bertha Bucy, many cousins who were like brothers and sisters to him as well as many doting aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Benjamin was preceded in death by his cousin and best friend, Steilyn Martin who passed away in June of 2016.
Benjamin graduated from Colorado State University in 2004 with a degree in wildlife biology. During his time at CSU, he was actively engaged in Phi Kappa Tau and maintained life-long, close ties with his fraternity brothers. In January of 2008, Benjamin joined the United States Coast Guard where he attended his basic training in Cape May, NJ. Following basic training, Benjamin was stationed in Virginia Beach, VA and worked aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Cohito. Benjamin went on to attend Marine Science Technician (MST) “A” school in Yorktown, VA in 2009 before being stationed in Willowbrook, IL at MSU Chicago from 2009-2013.
Benjamin met his wife, Kate, in the Fall of 2011 and they were married in June 2014 in Chicago, IL. Following his tour in Chicago, Benjamin was stationed in St. Louis, MO at Sector Upper Mississippi from 2013-2017. Benjamin and his wife had their first child, Jackson in November of 2016. After his tour in St. Louis, Benjamin was stationed at Sector LA/LB in San Pedro, CA in June of 2017. Benjamin and his wife had their second child, Madeline, in May of 2019. He was very passionate about his career in the Coast Guard and advanced to Petty Officer First Class, Marine Science Technician in June of 2019.
Outside of Benjamin’s work in the Coast Guard and spending time with his wife and children, he loved sports. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Blackhawks, Bears and Notre Dame football and had infinite knowledge about the players, teams, and rules of the games he loved.
Benjamin will forever be remembered for his infectious smile and laugh, his genuineness, and his great big bear hugs. He was an incredible father, loving husband, and dedicated friend.
A private service will be held for immediate family on Tuesday, May 26th at Green Hills Memorial Park in Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA. The family would kindly request that no flowers be delivered for the service. A future memorial and internment of his cremated remains will be scheduled at a later date.
