Barbeur Grimes Wise

November 8, 1924 — March 11, 2011

Born November 8, 1924 to Louise Barber Grimes and William H. C. Grimes, "Bobbe" Wise was raised in Syracuse, New York. She attended Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut where she received a BA in Psychology in 1946. Furthering her education, Bobbe attended Cornell University, and in 1948 received her Masters in Counseling and Student Personnel Administration. It was at Cornell where she met her husband, Roger Wise. They were wed at the Grimes' home in Syracuse the same year.
It was also in 1948 that Bobbe's career began when she started counseling at her alma mater followed by stints at Cazenovia Junior College and Hofstra University. She took time out from her budding business career to begin her life as a dedicated mother and housewife with the birth of her first son Scott in 1952; Andy followed in 1955, Cindy in 1956, and finally Brooks in 1959. In pursuit of Roger's career in aerospace technology at Univac, the family moved several times until finally settling in Palos Verdes Estates California in 1966.
In 1969, Bobbe renewed her career as an apartment management supervisor for the Rincon Construction Corporation and then as a Property Manager for Babcock Associates. In 1985, Bobbe joined Marilyn Ginsburg's property management firm, Grand House Management Company in San Pedro. She and Marilyn became fast friends where she remained in her employment for the past 25 years.
Bobbe led an active and full life over her 86 years. She was an avid tennis player and golfer through her 70s. She was an avid runner and completed the Palos Verdes Marathon in 1973. She enjoyed biking, hiking and pilates, and was a fervent Lakers and Dodgers fan. She loved her community and served it in many capacities, receiving 35 community service awards over her lifetime. She was recognized in 2007 with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Soroptimists of Los Angeles. In 2008, she received the Employee of the Year Award from the Apartment Association and the Paul Harris Fellowship Award from the Rotary Club. She also received a 50-year recognition award from the Junior League and, as a breast cancer survivor, was especially supportive of the "What-a-Pair" fundraising event. As an active member of her church St. Peters By The Sea since 1967, Bobbe served three terms as a deacon. She was a wonderful role model who always lived life to the fullest and showed the way through example and action. She was always ready with a kind word and remained a passionate, hardworking and self-sufficient woman to the very end.
Barbeur Grimes Wise was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by Scott (son) and Elisabeth Wise, Andy (son) and Lori Wise, Cindy Wise (daughter), and Brooks (son) and Katey Wise, and her six grandchildren, Tyler, Katrina, Eleanor, Ethan, Chloe, and Evan. Services will be held at 3:00 pm on March 25th at St. Peters By the Sea Presbyterian Church located at 6410 Palos Verdes Drive South in Rancho Palos Verdes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to St. Peters By The Sea Presbyterian Church or Connecticut College.
