Barbara Sloan Smith

February 27, 1933 — March 30, 2016

Barbara was born in Dallas, Texas to Charles and Doris Sloan on February 27, 1933. Her family settled in Palo Alto, California in 1942. Barbara met her future husband at the High School Junior Prom dance. For two years, she attended Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, joining the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She returned to the Bay Area and spent one year at San Jose State. Barbara married her high school sweetheart "Herc" in June 1954 after his graduation from Stanford University.

The newly married couple started life together in Los Angeles where Herc began his 55 year career as an Aerospace Engineer. Barb graduated from UCLA and went to work for Bank of America as a banking advisor to seniors. Two daughters joined the family, and they eventually settled on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Barbara became a consummate volunteer with Girl Scouts, Alpha Chi Omega, Crippled Children's Society, Literacy Council, and the Spinnakers of the Assistance League. She continued her love of playing bridge with her friends for over 50 years.

Stricken with cancer in August 2013, she fought a valiant battle without complaining.

She is survived by her husband Herc (Barry) of 62 years, two daughters, Carrie Harden (Larry), Diana Nowell (Robert), her brother and sister-in-law Charles & Lydia Sloan, and dozens of aunts and cousins located in North Carolina, Texas, and California.

Barbara has been laid to rest at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Assistance League of San Pedro or to the Torrance Memorial Home Health & Hospice. (See Charities section below)

The "Little General" left us peacefully on March 30, 2016.
