Anthony "Ante" Mlikotin

In 1925, Ante Mlikotin, of Rancho Palos Verdes, was born in the present day city of Zagreb, in the Republic of Croatia, and passed away September 13, 2013, at the fine age of 87. Ante came to the United States in 1952, traveling across the Pacific Ocean to New York City by freighter. Like many immigrants who came before him, Ante came to the U.S. with little, and worked hard to achieve the American dream and academic freedom. Ante was among the first foreign exchange students from Croatia accepted by Indiana University, where he worked his way through school to receive an undergraduate and doctorate degree. His first teaching assignment was at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), to be followed by several other distinguished teaching assignments throughout the U.S. In 1965, he began 30 years of teaching at the University of Southern California where he was the founding chairman of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, and retired in 1995 as Professor Emeritus. Ante was also an accomplished writer, who published several books on philosophy and Russian literature. He once penned himself as "an independent thinker and a free-lance writer." Family and friends will remember Ante for his charm, wit and giving heart, and colleagues and students for his intellect and love for the arts. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barbel Mlikotin, and his children, Marko Mlikotin and Dunja Wright, and five grandchildren. Mass will be held to remember and celebrate Ante's life on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Holy Trinity in San Pedro at 10:30am.
