Alonzo Monk

June 3, 1924 — April 13, 2014

Alonzo Monk, aka "Lon" died peacefully in his sleep on April 13, 2014. Lon was a devoted husband and father and he leaves behind his six children, Sally, Nora, Lon, and Nancy Monk; and Steve and Marcia Cook. Lon is also survived by his 11 grandchildren.

Lon was born in McAlester, Oklahoma in 1924. The youngest of four children, Lon was noted for various accomplishments, including setting a record for the 100 yard dash as part of his high school track team. At 19, he left Oklahoma to serve in World War II. Lon joined the Army Air Corps and became an aerial navigator. After the war, Lon went on to earn his undergraduate degree from UCLA and his medical degree from UCSF. Subsequently, he completed both an internship and residency at UCSF in Internal Medicine. Ultimately, Lon returned to Southern California to complete a four year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harbor/UCLA.

In 1956, Lon started practicing as an OB/GYN in Torrance. Over the next forty years, he maintained his private practice, served in leadership roles at Little Company of Mary, Torrance Memorial, and South Bay Hospitals and became a Clinical Professor at Harbor/UCLA. During this time, he delivered thousands of babies, including multiple generations in the same families.

Lon was an avid fisherman and particularly enjoyed fishing with friends and family at his mountain cabin in the Eastern Sierras. During the winters, he enjoyed skiing with his family. Lon was also a dedicated long distance runner. He completed over 150 marathons and inspired many of his family and friends to run also.

Services for Lon will be held at the Riviera United Methodist Church in Redondo Beach, California on April 29, 2014 at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Lon's honor to the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center. Information on making a donation is available at LABiomed.org.
