Dr. Alfred Kingsbury Corwin passed away peacefully in his home on October 29, 2012. He was born on November 5, 1923, in Columbus Ohio, to Katharine Webb Howe and Charles Mathias Corwin. The family moved California in 1926, and settled in Manhattan Beach, CA. There he enjoyed life at the beach with his brother, Chuck, fishing, swimming, body surfing, and diving off the pier. Al graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1942, and attended UCLA where he joined the US Army officers training, and served in the US Army during WWII. He returned to UCLA and met his bride, Dorothy Jean Graham, they graduated from UCLA and were married in 1949. Al then attended the California College of Optometry, graduating with his OD in 1952 and practiced Optometry in Redondo Beach, retiring in 2003 at age 80.
He was active in his community as a member of the Redondo Beach Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club. He was honored as Man of the Year by the Lions Club in 1982, and the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce in 1984, for his community service, particularly as Chairman of the Redondo Beach Easter Sunrise Service at the Redondo Beach pier, and as a volunteer with Mission Medica Independente that he traveled with traveling to provide medical and vision care to people in remote villages in Mexico.
Al was a golfer and a tennis player, and took up his favorite sport, marathon running, at age 45. He went on to run over 50 marathons, including the Boston marathon three times. His best Marathon time was 3 hours and 3 minutes. He was an excellent competitive Bridge player. His bucket list included sky diving and bungee jumping at age 73, parasailing at age 78, and completing the Palos Verdes half marathon at age 81 with his daughter, three grandsons, and a great grandson.
Al was preceded in death by his sisters Mary Peffer and Jean Corwin Clark. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Jean Corwin, brother Dr. Charles M. Corwin(Elouise), three children, Robyn Corwin of San Pedro, Ronald Kingsbury Corwin (Elizabeth) of Goleta, and Deborah Corwin Scott (Keyes) of Framingham, MA, nine grandchildren, Lori Brummel, James Eddy, Lisa Martin(Colin), Casey Patton, Christopher Corwin, Kathleen Corwin, Alfred William Scott, Ashley Barrera, and Holly Barrera; his three great-grandchildren Jonathan Brummel, Thomas Brummel, and Elizabeth Brummel, and a great-grandson due in March, his nieces Catharine Gill, Elizabeth Marum, Jane Corwin, Susan Pitsenberger, Linda Clark, Janet Cady, his nephews Alfred Clark, Paul Corwin, Thomas Peffer, John Graham, and Curtis Graham, and numerous great nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA on Friday Nov 9, 3pm-8pm. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 31290 Palos Verdes Drive W., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275, on Saturday, Nov 10th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Red Cross are welcome in memory of Al.
