Albert Monuki passed away due to complications of pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease at the age of 89 on July 2, 2016 surrounded by his family. Albert was born in Hawaii in 1927, the first son and second child of Shinko and Toshitsugu Monuki. Albert fondly remembered his days in Hawaii and the Punahou school. He moved with his family to the Tokyo area of Japan at the age of 8. After growing up in Japan, Albert joined the Japanese Etajima Naval Academy but the war ended before he completed training. After the war, Albert graduated from Waseda University. He met and married his wife Sakiko in Japan and they moved to California, where Albert attended the University of California, Berkeley. During their time in the Bay Area, Albert and Sakiko had two children, Edwin and Louise. After moving to Southern California, Albert spent most of his career working for TRW in the field of Aerospace Engineering. Through the course of his career he worked on numerous projects, including calculating gravity fields critical for the landing of the Apollo lunar module. Albert retired from TRW in 1987 after a long and successful career. Albert is survived by his wife Sakiko, children Edwin and Louise, grandchildren Chrystopher, Madeleine, Keira, Bennett, Brandon and Lauren, his brothers and sisters, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister. Private services will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimers Association (alz.org).
