Albert Paul Smith passed away Wednesday, August 30th, 2017 at the age of 96. Al, was a lifetime resident of San Pedro and retired Longshoreman. He was extremely proud to be a part of the San Pedro community throughout his life. His parents, Sedonia and Alexander Smith settled in San Pedro in the early 1900’s and started their family shortly thereafter. Albert was the youngest of their children born April 9th 1921. He had many fond memories with his two sisters Elsie and Vera growing up. His love of family started early, and flourished when he met his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth, deceased 2002. His devotion to family truly knew no bounds, and his daughters, grand and great grandchildren always felt unconditional love from an incredibly special man.
Albert proudly served in the Navy during WWII, and enjoyed recounting detailed stories from his time in the service. In fact, he could recall almost any detail from his life. His memory and attention to detail was beyond impressive, and throughout his life enjoyed reminiscing what car he (or his family) owned—the date, the model, and all details about the vehicle. He was very proud of the memories associated to each car and the family and friends he enjoyed them with.
Al loved spending time with family and friends, building in his workshop, traveling to Vegas or Washington, and enjoying food. He was extremely kind, smart, creative, passionate and loving. He will be truly missed, but always remembered. He is survived by his daughters, Diana and husband, Arthur Walton, Tamara and husband John Camello; grandchildren, Lizette and husband Greg Van Patten, Gloria Desirello, Marisa and Jason Walton; great grandchildren Billy and Jessica Van Patten, Anthony and Sofia Desirello; numerous nieces and nephews.
