Albert "Al" Lee Shipman, 79, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 30, 2013.

Albert was born on March 25, 1934, to Alto Shipman and Robbie Ward (Barbara Coleman). He graduated from Carver High School, where he played football and basketball. He has two years at Wilberforce College, where he majored in Science. He entered the U.S. Army in 1953. In 1954, he married Lois Byrd, and six children were born to this union. He served in Vietnam and Korea. After serving 32 years in the U.S. Army, Al's last duty station was in Los Alamitos, CA, where he retired in 1976 as a Chief Warrant Officer (W4).

Some of his many decorations included the National Defense Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal (2), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, among other recognitions.

He accepted Christ at an early age. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Wilmington for over 30 years, served as a Deacon, an Elder, and taught Sunday school. Al was well liked within the community—never met a stranger. He served on the City of Carson advisory council, as well as other committees. He was a founded member of Joint Water Pollution Control Plant Citizen Advisory Committee, and served as joint vice chair for four years. Al served over 30 years with the 33rd Degree Masonic Scottish Rite. He was an entrepreneur and owned a family health food and vitamin business for 39 years in Carson, CA.

Albert leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Lois, of 58 years, three sons Alfred Shipman and wife Robin of Ashburn, VA, Alphonso Shipman and Darcie Blalock of Ashburn, VA, Allan Shipman and wife Modise of Bristow, VA; two daughters Cynthia Balla of Reston, VA, and Sharon Shipman-Mirabal of San Pedro, CA; ten grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, three sisters Mary Wright and husband Reginald of Chicago, IL, Rosie Trapp of North Miami, FL, and Cassandra Conley and husband Al in Opalocka, FL, and brother Harold Shipman and wife Vicki in McGregor, TX, along with a host of sister-n-laws and brother-n-laws.
