Akira Deguchi

February 17, 1930 — April 17, 2021

Akira Deguchi passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 17. He was born and raised in San Pedro and lived there most of his 91 years. He spent 6 years in Utah during WWII and 2 years in the military serving in Japan during the Korean War. He graduated from Davis High School in Utah. After the war, the family returned to San Pedro and he started his career in gardening.

He was an avid bowler and enjoyed sports, especially the Dodgers and the Lakers. He retired at the age of 85, but still remained active tending his gardens and visiting friends. He was a familiar figure around town. He was kind and generous, always helping friends and family.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 65 years, Mary; 4 children, Karen Ginosar (Nathan), Tammi Wong, Ricky Deguchi (Cindy), and Jeffrey Deguchi; and 3 grandchildren, Brian Deguchi, Laura Deguchi, and Tori Wong.

A private family service was held at Green Hills Cemetery on May 6. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
