A. Christa Barry Floum was born just six years after the death of her genetic precursor, Claude Monet and spent her eight years breathing the same artistic air as her other guide in her Art life, Paul Klee. Each can be seen engendered in her work throughout her long career though her own evolutionary art contribution to the world's great search in painting and the plastic arts are apparent in her fearless explorations beyond even these two masters.
Born in Milan, Italy in the Fascist turmoil then engulfing the Old World not more than five hundred feet from the Castello Sforzesco and Michelangelo's last Pieta, to an aristocratic family she showed an early and persisting talent in drawing and later painting "particularly with the use of colored pencils and pastels" which she has amalgamated into much of her later work. Many of her later paintings, watercolors, pastels and even prints incorporate the use of her beloved colored pencils even now.
She immigrated after the war with her mother, two sisters and one brother to Atlantic City, New Jersey as her mother became a war bride after the death of her father. She spent the next ten years first in little theater and then taking private lessons in painting from a local artist, Hilda Robins, and marrying and having a child named Lorraine. It was not a happy union and she soon divorced and moved to Philadelphia, PA where she met her current husband of almost fifty years, Robert Floum. He was a newly minted artist himself and soon discovered her incredible talent.
In nineteen-sixty-seven, she started her professional career by entering the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA, the oldest and most prestigious art school in the country with the sponsorship of Hobson Pittman, Lou Sloan, Leon Kelly and Marshall Glaisser, four internationally known Artists and studied for five years and subsequently received her High School Diploma and her Bachelors Degree in the fine arts at the same time. She then moved onto the University of the Arts and received her Mosters of Fine Arts some two years later.
During this time she conceived her beloved son, Steven Andrew, now Steven Andrew Floum MD- married to Theresa Lieu and later her three grandchildren, Ashley, Nichol and Mathew. Additionally, she had been gifted by her older daughter, Lorraine with her beloved granson, Ryan Mitzel.
All through this very busy life she continued to produce many works of art, a sample having been shown in a one woman show in Long Beach, CA on Aug 1 - Aug 31, 2011. She has won many prizes, particularly at the Academy of Fine Arts Shows (both local and international) and is represented in collections from Philadelphia, New Jersey, Italy and Japan. She worked up until her death producing new and revolutionary work in her little studio in San Pedro.
She liked Dylan Thomas' motto,
"We will not go gently into that good night".
